Purpose: In addition to diverse forms of social problems in the stream of rapid development of industrial civilization and technical information, lives of people are becoming more complex. Moreover, increase of stress, loss of self-esteem and unified self-realization value are causing problems to not only individuals but also society’s development. The present research aims to analyze the effects of conscious breathing meditation on ego-identity, wellness and self-esteem of the general university students.
Method: In order to analyze the effects of conscious breathing meditation, recruited 47 students were randomly divided; 23 students as an experimental group and 24 students as a control group. The order of conscious breathing meditation is as in the followings: 1. To relax tense body 2. To do abdominal breathing 3. To stare inhalation 4. To stare the gap between inhalation and exhalation (stare glabella) 5. To stare exhalation 6. To stare the gap between inhalation and exhalation (stare glabella) 7. To count exhalation 8. To relax.
Result: The change of ego-identity was not statistically significant. However, the change of wellness was significant (p<0.012) and self-esteem was partially significant; out of sub-items of self-esteem, only social self-esteem was significantly changed (p<0.019).
Conclusion: A month-long programme of conscious breathing meditation had meaningful influence on change of wellness and sub-item of self-esteem. However, conscious breathing meditation of short time was insufficient and was limited to affect on the whole ego. It seems that sustained and systematic conscious breathing meditation will give a positive effect on our ego through self-reflection.
