Abstract

Based on theories of code-switching that appears mainly in bilingual societies, the purpose of this study is to analyze the aspect of code-switching in Chinese popular song lyrics for the past 3 years, and to find out the functions of the code-switching. The weekly top 15 songs, which were in the ‘China’s Top Rank Chart’for the past 3 years, were 596 excluding the songs that appeared more than once, 160 of them used code-switching. Among them, 152 songs had Chinese-English code-switching but there were not many code-switching between Chinese-minority language and Chinese-other foreign language. According to the matrix language frame of Myers-Scotton(1990), in Chinese pop songs, Chinese is the Matrix Language and English, minority language, and other foreign languages are Embedded Language. Among various types of Chinese-English code-switching, word switching was the most frequent, phrase switching was the second, and sentence switching was the third. The English parts embedded in Chinese sentences mostly lost refraction or appeared in original form, and followed the grammatical rules of Chinese. In code-switching between Chinese-other foreign languages and Chinese-minority language, the embedded foreign languages or minority languages were generally words, sentences, and paragraphs. As for functions, the code-switching in the lyrics of Chinese popular songs had 9 functions, which could be grouped into musical functions, meaningful functions, and linguistical functions. In musical aspect, code-switching serves as chuimsae (exclamations) and rhyming. In terms of meaning, the functions of code-switching are emphasis of theme, expression of intimacy, euphemism, approach toward audience, and expression of the singer’s identity. In linguistical functions, code-switching serves for harmony and convenience.
