The Influences of Practical Thought on the Development of Korean Tea Culture in the Latter Part of Chosun Dynasty

Tea culture entered into Korea since 1200 years ago. During this period, tea culture has developed with various characteristics and trends. Historically, Korean tea culture has formed focusing on the upper classes, and has reflected various thoughts, religions, arts of each epoch and society. Also tea culture has influenced on the politics and economy of every dynasty, and established new spiritual culture.
In the latter part of Chosun dynasty, people had experienced many wars and internal strifes, and felt devastation of mind and spirit. In this period, some scholars oriented into the practical thought had tried to reform trouble-ridden social life into moderated and good life, and to develop national economy. They had researched ways of developing practical social life and creating equality without classes. This was called as a Silhak(practical thought and sciences).
This research is focused on the study on the influences of practical thought in 18th century on the development of Korean tea culture. For this purpose, this research will give some ideas on the concepts of practical thought, basic ideas, background of forming this thought, some important schools, and scholars. If we want to investigate the influences of practical thought on the development of tea culture, it is necessary to know the practical thought and its scholars. Because the practical thought had influenced on the 18th's tea culture in the areas of agriculture, trade, and arts.
