Meaning of semiotic of autobiographical painting

-focusing on the artist's own works-

This study suggests that autobiographical paintings manifested from situations or experiences of the artist convey messages to viewers who appreciate and interpret the paintings and then communicate the meaning with others, rather than simply being a monologue of the artist alone. Paintings including cave murals of the primitive age to Christian art have linguistic characteristics which conveys significant meaning. Thus, the history of paintings has the same orbit as that of human communication and in every painting action it is intended for painters to speak to viewers. However, paintings are not intended to only convey messages any longer. Today's paintings are not only the subjects of representation. The paintings also infinitely create language which may be interpreted differently from the painter's intention by the viewers. From this perspective, this study speculated on the semantic actions of autobiographical paintings with personal stories. Signs are a means of communication which deliver messages through the five senses and are used by all beings which communicate. In particular, Peirce's Sign Theory is understood through interpretants that all things including human experience and perception influence sign action.
Therefore, this study examines the concepts of Peirce's Sign Theory and understands the semantic action with viewers who create meaning in paintings in which the subjective experiences of the painters are reflected and perceived as semantic action through the interpretants.
In this process, it was discovered that interpretation of autobiographical paintings is not done only by painters and their relationship with viewers, it is not one-sided. As reflection of the subjective experiences of painters in paintings can create free and active communication with viewers, paintings are visual language which can communicate success and failure in semantic action.
This study will provide opportunities for an artist to speculate on their artistic activity and to continue the communication in semantic action among viewers.
