Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate perceptions and intention to use physical restraints for dementia patients among nurses in geriatric hospitals. Method: A cross-sectional study design was used and participants included 112 nurses who were recruited from geriatric hospitals. Data on general characteristics and perceptions and intention to use physical restraints for dementia patients were collected. Using SPSS/WIN 21.0 program data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression. Results: There were significant differences in the perception of physical restraints for dementia patients according to wrist restraints, lapboard with wheelchair, and alternative methods. Also the intention was significant differences according to age, position, mobility decline, alternative methods, physical restraints guideline, family compliant. Perceptions was positively correlated with intentions. These factors were explained about 51% of the total variance of physical restraints which was applied by nurses' intention. Conclusion: This study was showed that the higher the perception of physical restraints for dementia patients in the geriatric hospital, the intention was more allowed. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the indiscriminate use of physical restraints and to use alternatives through periodic training and education.
