Abstract
OBJECTIVE : The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on periodontal healing of replanted teeth surface in dogs histologically and histomorphometrically.

MATERIALS ANDMETHODS : Total 36 roots of mandibular incisors and premolars from six mongrel dogs were used in this study. The roots were randomly divided into three groups: (1) a positive control group (n=12), in which the periodontal ligament(PDL) and the cementum were retained and the roots were soaked in 1ml saline for 5 minutes; (2) a negative control group (n=12), in which the PDL and the cementum were removed and the roots were soaked in 1ml saline for 5 minutes; and (3) an experimental group (n=12), in which the PDL and the cementum were removed and the roots were soaked in 1ml PRP for 5 minutes. After soaking the root surfaces, the extracted roots were replanted into extraction sockets. Canals of all roots were filled with calcium hydoxide and the crowns were removed. the roots were covered using a coronally repositioned flap. The animals were sacrificed four and eight weeks after surgery for histologic and histomorphometric evaluation.

RESULTS : At four and eight weeks, the roots in positive control group almost showed normal PDL and cementum. The roots in negative control group almost showed ankylosis. The roots in experimental group almost showed PDL-like tissue and cementum like tissue. but the width of PDL-like tissue and cementum-like tissue were irregular with resorption of root surface. At four weeks, histomorphometric analysis of cross sections showed that the mean length of the PDL-like tissue on the roots soaked with PRP was significantly greater than that of the tissue on the roots in the negative control group(P=0.020) and PDL on the roots in the positive control group(P=0.020). At eight weeks, the mean length of the PDL-like tissue on the roots soaked with PRP was significantly greater than that of the tissue on the roots in the negative control group(P=0.021) and greater than PDL on the roots in the positive control group(P=0.564). But there's no singinficance with the positive control group. At four weeks, the mean length of the cementum-like tissue on the roots soaked with PRP was significantly greater than that of the tissue on the roots in the negative control group(P=0.034) and PDL on the roots in the positive control group(P=0.018). At eight weeks, the mean length of the cementum-like tissue on the roots soaked with PRP was greater than that of the tissue on the roots in the negative control group(P=0.271) and PDL on the roots in the positive control group(P=0.561). But there's no singinficance with the negative control group and the positive control group.

CONCLUSION : These results showed that the use of PRP on tooth replantation resulted in significant increase of PDL-like tissue and cement-like tissue on replanted tooth in dogs. These suggested that PRP was beneficial role in periodontal tissue healing and the usage of PRP could be an option for replantation of periodontal involvement teeth.
