The Influence of Parents’ Abuse and Neglect on Mobile Phone Dependence of Adolescents
: Testing Mediating Effects of Depression and School Maladjustment and Moderating Effects of Gender, Extracurricular Activity, and Coeducation

Mobile phone dependence is an abnormal, but increasingly widespread, form of mobile phone usage which has a range of negative personal and social consequences for many adolescents. Numerous studies have reported problematic use of, and dependence on, mobile phone among the youth. Previous research has investigated the relationship between perceived abuse and neglect and mobile phone dependence of adolescents. Previous research has also identified the mediating effects of depression and school maladjustment of adolescents. However, empirical evidences for the relationships between the aforementioned variables are not sufficient for high school students in Korea. There is a need to gain an overall understanding of adolescents’ mobile phone usage including positive impacts and negative effects.

The goals of the present study are two fold. First, this study investigates the influence of perceived abuse and neglect on mobile phone dependence among adolescents. Second, this study assesses whether there are the mediating effects of depression and school maladjustment between the independent variables (perceived abuse and neglect) and the dependent variable (mobile phone dependence).

A proposed structural model to the realm of mobile phone dependence among adolescents was tested employing Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). That is, the causal model has been constructed to have a structural explanation for the relationships among perceived abuse and neglect, depression, school maladjustment, and mobile phone dependence among adolescents. A total of 14 hypotheses are proposed to explain the causal and structural relationships between the aforementioned variables. This study analyzed the fourth wave data from KCYPS 2010 (Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2010). The areas covered in the questionnaire were: mobile phone dependence, perceived abuse and neglect, depression, school maladjustment, as well as socioeconomic backgrounds (gender, extracurricular activity, coeducation etc.). The study was carried out by a number of statistical analyses including descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, explorative factor analysis, confirmative factor analysis, t-test, ANOVA, structural equation modeling (SEM), and so on.

The results of the present study are as follows. First, measurement model has a good convergent and discriminant validity. Second, the present study yielded a relatively good fit given the sample data with χ2=3,512.035, df=289, p<0.001 as well as TLI=0.902, GFI=0.906, CFI=0.913, RMSEA=0.061.

Third, the present study identified a number of causal relationships between perceived abuse, neglect, depression, school maladjustment, and mobile phone dependence. Perceived abuse had a positive and direct effect on depression. Neglect had a positive and direct effect on depression. Neglect had a positive and direct effect on school maladjustment. Perceived abuse had a positive and direct effect on mobile phone dependence. Neglect had a positive and direct effect on mobile phone dependence. Depression had a positive and direct effect on school maladjustment. Depression had a positive and direct effect on mobile phone dependence. School maladjustment had a positive and direct effect on mobile phone dependence.

Fourth, the present study identified a number of mediating effects among perceived abuse, neglect, depression, school maladjustment, and mobile phone dependence. Perceived abuse is indirectly and positively related to school maladjustment through depression. Perceived abuse is indirectly and positively related to mobile phone dependence through depression. Neglect is indirectly and positively related to school maladjustment through depression. Neglect is indirectly and positively related to mobile phone dependence through depression. Depression is indirectly and positively related to mobile phone dependence through school maladjustment.

Fifth, the present study also identified the existence of the moderating effects of gender, extracurricular activity, and coeducation. Gender moderated the effect of abuse on mobile phone dependence. Gender moderated the effect of depression on mobile phone dependence. Extracurricular activity moderated the effect of abuse on school maladjustment. Extracurricular activity moderated the effect of depression on school maladjustment. Coeducation moderated the effect of abuse on depression. Coeducation moderated the effect of abuse on mobile phone dependence.

Finally, Discussion and implications are provided. That is, implications of these findings and suggestions for practice and policy are discussed. Four broad recommendations for further research are also discussed.
