Abstract

A Study on the Family Consciousness in Poems of Park Mog–wol

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the sense of family appearing in Park Mok-Wol's poetry and to understand his poetry connected to his faith. For the convenience of analysis, l name the works reflected in family or the sense of family about family-poetry. Although there are a number of topics in addition to the topic of family, the object of the paper is limited in the poetry of family appearing in the sense of family. Park Mok-Wol is known for a national lyric poet. Such a basis is found in early poetry of nature . Negative reviewa are rather dominant over religious poetry after the middle period of his poetry. But his religious poetry tends to cover between nature in the early period and daily life in the milddle period. The reason that nature and daily life in religious poetry could be in harmoney is that religious poetry is formed by the medium of family. Family is not only imple blood relation-centered immediate family but also the broad concept that horizontally covers neighbors and vertically the object of faith. Since his faith is passed down from his mother, there is a lot of relgious confession in poetry to recall the family. His poetic object shifs nature to daily life and is intensified in his inward consciousness. Like this, the world of his works is changed into various topics but the memory of the family is always connected to faith. His sense of family ranges from the narrow family to the broad family. The narrow family consists of blood relation. It is expressed through the relationship of mother , of children and wife. lt is mainly discussed in chapter 2. The narrow sense of family is formed by his mother but the relationship of his father is missing. She had a sincere faith and put God's love into action for family. Then it greatly influences on the formation of his sense of family. Her maternity always included Christian background and maternal love appeared in agape if God. He had consciousness as a father by himself and tried to care for his family. He had paternal love on his children and shared with his wife. The model of his paternal love was his mother. His paternity was inherent in his maternity. In a sense, A feminine paternity is a mark. The broad family is a form that his sense of family extends. It includs horizontally neighbors and vertically faith communities.The Christian faith greatly effected to extend his sense of family. lt is mainly discussed in chapter 3. He denies the traditional patriarchal authority because his sense of family includes the Christian consciousness. He rather takes a attitude to defend and protect others by the maternal love. He thinks that neighbors are not visitors but members of family. lt is practical expression of universal love within Christianity. ln the appendix of my paper, l provide practical information and statistics about his family-poetry. l try to relieve inconvenience not to study of his whole family through the appendix. This dissertation is obviously included in the Christian contexts of the family-poetry of Park Mok-Wol and expected to contribute an estimation of his literature history.
