- Abstract
- Urban space in Korea has developed focusing on hardware only, so it has had the limitation of standardized image. To overcome this limitation and to form the image of competitive city, every local governments has employed policies utilizing culture. Since 2002, ‘Cultural City Development Project’ has implemented as a method for the formation of a Cultural City Image and Space Cultural Contents has attracted attention as one of the most concrete strategies.
In this paper, Space Cultural Contents denote providing people with cultural contents using space as a platform. Space Cultural Contents make it possible to reform cities and to realize their image grafting cultural contents onto space and bring positive effect which makes people be able to feel culture in daily life and makes quality of life be improved.
In this viewpoint, the concept of Space Cultural Contents have made little difference with similar terms and it is in need for more specific methodology and related research. Large cultural facilities and large festivals has been rather in focus, so, negative effects such as standardized image and financial pressure on cities have emerged. In the present situation, Gwang-ju city was chosen as the target cite of the cultural hub city and it was authorized to overcome upper limitations, to make culture play a key role, and to promote strategy for formation of the cultural city image.
The purpose of this study is to draw Application Methods for Space Cultural Contents to form the Cultual City Image through case researches and ,based on the result, to propose practical Application Methods to Gwang-ju city. The results of this study were as follows.
First, ‘experienceability’ should be considered to provide programs for people to experience them, to enjoy them, and to make a positive estimation so as to form positive city image. To make best use of experienceability, the programs should be not only visual and active but also stimulative of all senses of people to feel cultural emotion and to recognize Gwang-ju city as the cultual city by themselves.
Second, accessibility should be considered which plays key role for formation of culture resource and culture network that are components of culture city. Accessibility can graft culture onto daily spaces such as cafe or restaurant, it can make easier access to free participation, and it also play a role to form a network through communication with local culturati. To last this network, various approaches for cultural contents could be discussed beyond simple graft onto daily spaces.
Third, uncommon inner space is needed to be built to support cultural activity. Spaces such as archive, counseling center can be provided unlike commercial facility and symbolic image from outer structure can be reflected to stimulate associations with the meaning of culture contents. Inner space which has changeable structure could be used to deduct uncommon experience.
Fourth, extensibility must be considered to reinterpret cultural contents which are pivotal in Space Cultural Contents and to reproduce them into different kind of contents. For example, agency can be established to discover artists and to support them. Lecture programs also can be set up using aid of existing artists.
Fifth, ‘Symbolism’ means characteristic which interprets the cultural contents of the area and generates visual symbol image of it. It could also stand for geographical inclination or historical trait of the area. The reflection of historical symbolism of the area can strengthen the image of it, can make people be able to experience cultural trait, and can suggest inner-outer Space Application Method granting symbolic meaning onto color, logo, and finishing materials.
The results of this study show that positive Cultural City Image can be perceived and formed through expansion of opportunity for cultural activity using Space Cultural Contents. The Space Application Methods drawn from this case research were offered to Dongmyeong-dong, Gwang-ju but met limitation to offer specific design elements or physical environmental aspects. Further study should be proceeded on specific design plan.
