Abstract

The purpose of this research paper is to analyze the Sijos from Gangjin area, the poet’s career, and their associations. This will seek the distinguishing features of Gangjin area Sijos and how they are important to literature history. The second chapter will investigate four poets, Hoobaek Lee, Eungjung Kim, Kisu Kwak, and Igeon Oh, in Joseon Dynasty. It will also investigate these four poets’ careers, association, and the poems. The third chapter will go over the form and the most frequently appeared subject from the Gangjin Sijos. All of the Gangjin Sijos reflected morality of that time. It seemed that such subject came from the wishes to raise their social position by practicing moral lives. It is also one of the features of Hyangchon Sijos. The common format that appeared in the Sijo is that the poets used a lot of imagery and the quotes from the old story. Because such area did not have much opportunity to access to many literatures, the Gangjin Sijos are known for having a bad literary value compared to Honam Sijos. Based on such characteristics, the comparison between Gangjin Sijos and Honam Sijos had developed the literature history. The morality that appeared in Honam Sijos was from people who had been kicked out, had wished to be, or had been in the political circles. Thus, they wrote the Sijos to show off their morality. On the other hand, the morality that appeared in Gangjin Sijos was from people who wished to raise their social position by practicing moral lives. For the format matter, Honam Sijos described the natural landscape and the poets themselves living in the scene rather than to use imagery and the quotes from the old story. These are the differences between format of Honam Sijos and that of Gangjin Sijos. Also, it seemed that such features of Gangjin Sijos affected a poet named Baekkyu Wui, in 18thcentury. To sum up, Gangjin Sijos in Joseon Dynasty have similar characteristics with Honam Sijos while both have distinguishing formats and subjects. Also, we could know the subtle differences help develop the literature history. From such results, we could reconsider the previous research method of literatures. The method for researching Gangjin Sijos that I did was to find out “Gangjin area Sijos as Honam Sijos”, since Gangjin area is included in the Honam area. However, Gangjin Sijos have some characteristics of Honam Sijos, while, at the same time, they have the distinguishing features that Honam Sijos don’t reflect. That is, we need to reconsider the method that is only focused on the time and place in which the Sijos were written. If we look closer, we can easily notice that there is a possibility to have a lot of distinguishing features even though the Sijos were written by the same person at the same time and the same area. If we see the Sijos broadly without any prejudice, Honam Sijos that have a reputation for having lower literature values, will be investigated more. Indeed, our cultural literature will be more researched and the importance of the literature history will be more highlighted.
