This study compared and analysed the poetry written by Hwang Jin-Eee, a representative Korean Giseng, and Wang Mi, a representative of Chinese Giseng. It was judged that they could be subjects for comparison in that they have similar historical backgrounds and literary achievements although there is a difference in the amount of poetry they wrote.
Chapter 1 presented the purpose of the study and examined the history of research on the two poets.
Chapter 2 outlined their lives and poetic works. In summing up diverse information on them, Hwang Jin-Eee was a female poet who was actively engaged in writing poetry under the reign of King Jungjong and King Myongjong, and Wang Mi's literary activity was from 1599 to 1644. The former preferred Chilunjeolgu (a quatrain with seven words to a line) as a poetry style while the latter preferred Ounyulsi (a Chinese poetry style with eight lines and five characters in one phrase).
Chapter 3 analysed their perspectives on ‘love and separation’, ‘elegance and taste’, and ‘attitude toward life.’ As for ‘love and separation’, Hwang Jin-Eee was outstanding in the aesthetics of missing while Wang Mi was remarkable in the aesthetics of waiting. With respect to ‘taste and elegance’, Hwang Jin-Eee showed manly attraction through manly tones while Wang Mi showed feminine attraction through friendship with noble ladies in the ‘attitude toward life’, Hwang Jin-Eee revealed empty feelings through reflection while Wang Mi accepted reality through a love of nature.
Chapter 4 speculated on the meaning of their poetry in the history of literature. Hwang Jin-Eee's poetry made a great contribution to the development of poetic literature in Korea, and in particular, it paved the way for development of Chinese poetry written by women. Wang Mi's poetry had meaning in that it secured the position of Chinese poetry written by Giseng and completed the peak of Giseng literature.
Chapter 5 summarized what was discussed in this study.
