In 1997 「Life Magazine」 dealt with special articles about Millennium. Among them there was an article about 'top 100 events of the last Millennium'. The 28th top event of it was 'the change of the lives of people due to the introduction tea to Europe in the early seventeenth'.
Chinoiserie that Europeans admired Chinese culture and goods was the trend in the mid-17th century and tea was one thing of that. It was accepted first into royal families as a culture of ‘elegant and classical culture’. So it was the drinks of high-end hobby for people of special status. But in Britain cultural deepening and spreading in tea and tea culture were occurred so tea became ‛national drink' that the whole nation loved and drank. By the middle of eighteenth century it became ‘a Great Britain's signature quaff'. It was not any more only spiritual drink, but also essentials for daily lives with the value of cultural and social drink. So tea and tea culture became a something with different meaning, effect and value in Britain compared to China. Tea in Britain had new cultural and social meaning and utility different from that in Orient, tea and tea culture's birthplace, and more over it was reestablished as the British style tea culture. Cultural leap and spread took place in tea and tea culture. And again it has been spread to the whole world and reaccepted so now the British tea culture became a sonorous and plenteous liberal culture from all over the world.
Around the middle of eighteenth century, the Regency period, a very famous female novelist Jane Austen was born in Britain. She left six great works like『Sense and Sensibility』,『Pride and Prejudice』,『Mansfield Park』,『Emma』,『Northanger Abbey』,『Persuasion』 from 1811 to 1817 during her living and 『Sanditon』and two others were posthumous.
There were several definitions about the character of her novels. First in Regency period, she wrote it with describing it with realistic and satirical touch that the details of daily lives of the British middle-class families focusing on the new landlord class(Gentry class). So her novel is estimated as the novel of manners that reproduces the norms and customs of de nos jours. She dealt with the main characters' everyday lives in her works: their sense of values, the love affairs of various types of characters in the society of secularization and materialism due to the development of capitalism, marriage, family lives, the relationships among the household members, interpersonal relationships, class consciousness, and their materialism and so on. And so her works have been accepted with a variety of assessment: a domestic novel, a romance novel, a bourgeois novel, and the novel of women because she treated many problems throughout the home and in society.
I selected her novels as the material for this paper because she wrote her novels(finished 6 novels, unfinished and some posthumous novels) in the comparatively short period (seven years, based on year of publication) and one of the common subjects of the novels was tea and tea culture.
We, the readers, can find and understand many kinds of information that Jane Austen showed us about that period thanks to her writing technique of drawing pictures minutely. In the novels of Austen she showed us the daily lives of the protagonists' world around the tea table, various circumstances and events, their conversations and relationships among the characters. Even though those lives were in the narrow and small world around tea table, but they were unfolded and drew them with the meaning and state of not a space of isolation from the society of individual but the space of unity and healing, relaxation and socializing to the extent of cultural enjoyment and learning society.
‛Austin phenomenon’ is a cultural one that Austen becomes a brand with high recognition that is stamped to the public. That is, the name of Austen became a commodity with popularity and reputation. So I think it precious to study and research on Jane Austen and tea and tea culture in her novels.
People who live in modern age, the period of industrial capitalism, literature, one part of art, is not any more pure art that takes charge of spiritual part of human beings, but a source text content which derives so many derivatives that it can make huge money.
Modern is the period of cultural content industry. Content is a data or an information such as sign, character, voice, sound, images, or video, and visual image expressed by the definition of Act of Industry Promotion refers to all the information digitalized. The core of cultural content industry is based on a variety of compelling content and high value-added utilizing, the so-called ‘one-source multi-use’, OSMU. In the part of cultural content industry I think the precious and good original source is very important than anything else, because if there is a proper source content (one source), it can make infinite profits with various and effective use.
In this paper I appreciate the works of Jane Austen's as the one source in the OSMU of great worth. So at first I'd like to research tea culture content among Jane Austen's works and the other works of other's about her and her works. And there again I want to research that how and how much industrialized and commercialized of them, and they are with us in present with the value of infinite economic resources.
