- Abstract
- Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the color stability, water sorption and cytotoxicity of thermoplastic denture base resins for the non metal clasp dentures to those of conventional heat-cured denture base resin.
Methods: Thee denture base resins, which are conventional heat-cured acrylic resin (Paladent 20), thermoplastic acrylic resin (Acrytone), thermoplastic polyamide resin (Bio Tone), were used as materials of this study. Forty five specimens of each three group were fabricated. For the color stability test, specimens were immersed in the coffee, wine, green tee and water for 1 and 8 weeks. Color change was measured by spectrometer. Water sorption also tested after 1 and 8 weeks immersion in the water. For the test of cytotoxicity, cell viability assay was measured and cell attachment was analyzed by FE-SEM.
Results: In color stability test, all type of denture base resins showed color changes after 1 and 8 weeks immersion. However, there was no significant difference between denture base resins. There was difference between immersion solution. All resins show significant color changes in the coffee. In water sorption test, thermoplastic acrylic resin showed lower values than conventional heat-cured acrylic resin and thermoplastic polyamide resin. In cell viability assay, thermoplastic polyamide resin showed most abundant cell attachment than conventional heat-cured acrylic resin in 1, 6 and 10 days. Thermoplastic acrylic resin showed similar cell attachment but more stable attachment compare to conventional heat-cured acrylic resin.
Conclusions: Color stability, water sorption and cytotoxicity of thermoplastic acrylic resin and thermoplastic polyamide resin for the non metal clasp denture showed similar or better results than conventional heat-cured acrylic resin. Therefore, these thermoplastic resins seem to be used in the mouth with long term stability.
