Abstract

This study examined the poetry writing of Seo-yeongsuhap(1753-1823) of the late Josen Dynasty and Sang-gyeongnan(1605~1676?) of the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty and the characteristics of their poetry. First, Seo-yeongsuhap and Sang-gyeongnan were outstanding female poets from noble families at a time when feminine literature prospered. Both of them began to write poetry after they were married. Seo- yeongsuhap began to write poetry with her husband's recommendation as a poetic partner. She did not record her own poetry herself because she was under the ethical discipline of her husband's family. However, Sang-gyeongnan continued to pursue freedom with her husband's support after she was married. Second, both wrote lots of poems on separation which was hardly seen in female poets from noble families. However, their poetry on separation did not focus on love of a beloved or missing one's lover that had left, unlike other female poets from other classes. Seo-yeongsuhap sang how she felt about separation from children while Sang-gyeongnan sang about separation from husband and friends due to patriotic duties. Third, both of them emphasized the self-consciousness of women from noble families. Seo-yeongsuhap tried to pursue harmony between ethics and desire. She was willing to stick to Confucian ideology following the discipline of her family although she had a conflict in pursuing her desire through poetry writing. Sang-gyeongnan was brought up in a family where the freedom for women to start something was allowed. So, after she was married, she actively pursued literary creation to establish a family society of poets. After her husband died for his country, she had a crisis in her writing, but she overcame her anxiety of being alone in a period of turbulence through independent self-consciousness and kept writing poetry to realize her own value.
