Effects of Nutrition-Plus Program for Women, Infants and Children in Gwangju City

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of nutrition-plus program for low income pregnant and lactating women, infants and children through age of four in Gwangju area. For 19 months supplemental foods were provided to 217 participants, and in addition, adult subjects were received nutrition education once a month. After the program, it was noted that anthropometry of height for age, weight for age in infants were significanyly improved, compared with those indices before the program. Furthermore, hemoglobin concentration in the children and pregnant women was increased significantly(p<0.001), as a result less anemic was found. However, this tendency was not observed in the lactating women. Twenty-four hour dietary recall revealed that more adequate intakes of energy, protein, Ca, Fe, vitamin A and riboflavin, thiamin, niacin in the participants due to implementation of the program. Surprisingly, intake of vitamin C was only 60-80% of Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs). Nutrition knowledge and attitude of subjects was significantly improved(p<0.001). Generally this study indicated that nutrition-plus program for low income infants and children and women were effective to improve previous nutritional status. The nutrition intervention strategies might be recommended to enhance vitamin C status for low income infants and mother. It might be suggested that effective nutrition education program especially targeting for lactating women should be developed and implemented to establish the proper dietary behavior.
