Focusing on dramas, movies and musicals derived from novels, this study speculated on the Flute Sonata Op.167 “Undine” for which Carl Reinecke(1824-1910), a romantic composer of the late 19th century, adapted for『Undine』, a creative novel by Friedrich de la Motte-Fouqué(1777-1834).
Romanticism composers in the late 19th century intended to musically describe natural sound. As they paid more attention to the world of fairy tales, they combined that with literature to create music. Such a tendency was an opportunity to write the Flute Sonata Op.167 “Undine” which was adapted from『Undine』written by Friedrich de la Motte-Fouqué. Therefore, this study aimed to speculate on the title music, the musical expression and the relationship between the novels and music in that piece.
In 1811, Friedrich de la Motte-Fouqué(1777-1834) published the novel titled『Undine』.
A water spirit named “Undine” loved a man and acquired a true soul, but finally she was abandoned. As she was very sad, she took his soul and stayed beside his grave.
Reinecke adapted this story which prevailed in late Romanticism period and published the 「Flute Sonata Op.167 “Undine”」.
This study investigated Reinecke's life and his music and the structure of sonata music before understanding the relationship between the novel and the flow of the music. This music is in a typical sonata form made of four movements, but Movement 1 is a sonata form, Movement 2 is a rondo, and Movements 3 and 4 are of the ABA form with slow chapters. While the music follows a typical sonata form, there are romantic elements in each movement and it is closely related with the content of the novel. This music has factors of the title music combined, and shows classic sonata form and harmonic techniques as well. So it has been considered an important part of the repertoire for flute players, but for a more perfect performance, the content of the novel, the characteristics as a musical piece, and the title factors and expression should be understood.
