Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the distribution of stages of change(SC) in exercise behavior of some university students by applying the transtheoretical model to figure out the possible related factors between SC and process of change, decisional-making balance(pros and cons) and self efficacy according to the exercise practice so that they can be utilized as fundamental data for developing and teaching exercise invention programs for some university students.
Method: The study subjects were surveyed by some university students in 4 universities in G city. Total 1000 copies of questionnaires were distributed, and 959 responded ones were analyzed. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, one way-ANOVA and multiple logistic regression analysis using SPSS Ver. 18.0 for Window.
Results:
1. The distribution of SC with the exercise behavior changing stage tool were as follow; pre-contemplation stage(PC) 16.2%, contemplation stage(C) 37.0%, preparation stage(P) 27.0%, action stage(A) 13.6%, maintenance stage(M) 6.2%, respectively. Only 19.8% of students were practicing regularly, and the intentional groups that don't exercise currently but are to start movement within the next 1-6 months occupied 80.2%.
2. As the results of multiple logistic regression analysis, the motivational factors influencing on transition from PC to C were experimental(OR: 1.052, 95%CI: 1.009-1.096) and behavioral process of change(OR: 1.059, 95%CI: 1.013-1.107), Cons(OR: .925, 95%CI: .863-.992) that from C to P was behavioral process of change(OR: 1.054, 95%CI: 1.013-1.096), Cons(OR: .935, 95%CI: .881-.991) and that from P to A was self efficacy(OR: 1.064, 95%CI: 1.006-1.125) significantly (p<.05). But, there was no related factors influencing on transition from A to M.
Conclusion: To sum up the results above, we confirmed that process change, decisional-making balance and self efficacy were significantly associated with stages of exercise behavior changes. Therefore the transtheoretical model would be applicable to explain the exercise behavior change of some university students.
So this study will be necessary to develop effective exercise intervention programs and to provide useful information.
