A Study on the Ways for Increasing Agricultural Trade
between Korea and China

Globally, agriculture has continuously changed through research and development of scientific technology. Rapid changes in agricultural and related economic phenomena have also been seen. In particular, along with such global phenomena in agriculture, national and international agricultural and rural environment has been rapidly changing. As China borders Korea geographically, and the population there has a similar food culture and consumption tendencies as Koreans, their agricultural production compliments ours. China is the largest trading partner for Korea. With the entry of China into the WTO, trade in agricultural products between both countries has been expanded further, and their agricultural production has a great influence on our society and economy because it is directly related with the incomes of farmers. This study derived problems in the trade of agricultural products between Korea and China, and analysed data on strategies for trade in agricultural products in order to present alternatives for an increase in trade in agricultural products which will contribute to the economic development and joint prosperity of both countries. For the purpose of this study, the status of agriculture in both countries, the trade status and policies were examined, and through survey data on the competitive power in trade of agricultural products, the Trade Specialization Index(TSI), the Revealed Comparative Advantage(RCA), and the Trade Intensity Index(TII) were analysed. Problems in trade between both countries and strategies to further trade were suggested. As a result, through TSI, it was discovered that the competitive power of Chinese agricultural products in trade was much higher than for Korea. As for the RCA, a comparative advantage in the export of agricultural products was higher than Korea. When the TSI was analysed, it was discovered that complementation in trade between Korea and China was higher in comparison with the global level, and it was very strong in the trade structure. Like this, to consider the rapid development in trade between Korea and China, it was found that the economic conditions in China are closely related to Korean. In conclusion, it is expected that the rich resources of China, hugh investment markets and cheap labor will contribute to higher efficiency in the environmental improvement of agricultural and the rural environment, higher productivity and the use of resources, and furthermore, the two countries economic interdependence will be more intense. Both countries should supplement each other in agricultural development and for economic growth rather than being fiercely competition, in order to reduce trouble and disputes in trade for mutual profit through further cooperation.
