Abstract
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychiatric characteristics of outpatients with tinnitus.
Methods : A total of 88 subjects were included in this study. According to Tinnitus Handicap Inventory(THI) score, the subjects were classified into two groups; mild tinnitus symptoms(mild-tinnitus) group and severe tinnitus symptoms(severe-tinnitus) group. A questionnaire was used for assessment of demographic characteristics, THI, Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) about tinnitus, Beck Depression Inventory(BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory(BAI), and other clinical psychiatric characteristics.
Results : Higher THI score was positively correlated with tinnitus course, numbers of accompany symptom, and VAS. BDI total score, BDI factors, and BAI total score were significantly high in severe-tinnitus group. Also Suicidal ideation, interpersonal problem, sleep problem, occupational impairment, and fatigue showed significantly higher in severe-tinnitus group than mild-tinnitus group.
Conclusion : Tinnitus is a common and have a frequently psychiatric problem. It is concluded that psychiatric intervention should be taken into consideration in the treatment of patients suffering tinnitus.
