A language reflects on social life and changes in thought patterns. New things and concepts appear as new forms of words, through which social status can be understood.
China has made rapid development in diverse areas since its reform and opening up and an enormous number of new words were created through events such as the Beijing Olympics in 2008, the Shanghai Expo, and the Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010. Studies on new words in China have provided opportunities to understand the current status of Chinese society, its language practices, and the development of society. This study classified the new words coined from 2006 to 2010 into the areas of politics, economy, life, culture, science(Internet and networks), education, and current events to speculate on current Chinese society.
Chapter 2 explains the concept of new words and their background, and defines them as new words which reflect the present and are used by the people of the present. Changes in economic systems, changes into a society that considers knowledge and elites as important, and changes in scientific technology and Internet development were considered as the social background while trends to seek higher cultural levels, to pursue new things, and to parody trends were considered as the psychological background.
Chapter 3 examines the routes of creating new words. They were roughly divided into internal and external routes. The internal routes included a method where words are mixed in new ways, one where meaning is expanded by adding new meanings to existing words, one where meaning is contracted, and one where polysyllable words are contracted to create new forms.
For the external routes, vocabulary in local dialects and the influence of accepting foreign words was examined.
Chapter 4 analyses the status of Chinese society centering on new words made between 2006 and 2010. With respect to politics, new words involving political corruption, ones reflecting diverse policies, and ones reflecting diplomatic relations were created. In consideration of the new words reflecting the market economy, prices and consumption styles in economic areas, it is predicted that a number of new words reflecting side effects of future economic developments will appear. With respect to life and culture, new words expressing difficulty in the job market, unemployment, diversification of consciousness, and the life of modern people were examined and it is predicted that new words in theses areas will continue to appear. In science, new words showing advanced technology, aerospace exploration, diverse diseases and remedies have appeared, and in particular, the number of those involving the environment and Internet reflecting blogs and weibo have been increasing. With respect to education, there were many of new words reflecting on examinations for university entrance. Through the new words in current events reflecting the negative side brought by the continuous development of society, a variety of problems in Chinese society were understood.
This study speculated on the society of China through new words which were created from 2006 to 2012 and it was discovered that new words reflect on society as they are formed through social development and are changed according to the development of society. Also, they are important clues through which the development of future society can be predicted as well as show the past in our society. Although it is impossible to understand all aspects of Chinese society only through the new words which were formed over five years, it is expected that the results of the study will be a little helpful in understanding the current developments in China and its society, and more organized research on new words will be made in the future.
