조지오웰의 <1984년>에 담긴 현대적 파시즘에 대한 고찰

Abstract

조지 오웰이 살았던 1948년은 불의와 궁핍과 비인간성이 넘쳐나고 죄의식이 가슴을 찢는, 최악의 정치적 상황이었다. 이러한 정치적 현실에서 어떤 작가가 순수한 미학적 태도를 견지한다는 것은 사실상 불가능하였다. 하지만 오웰은 시대적 상황에 타협하고 굴복하지보다는 지식계층의 사회적 책무와 작가로서의 사명감을 깊이 통찰하여 숭고한 결심을 실천하는 모범적인 작가의 태도를 견지하였다. 오웰이 <1984년>을 통해 말하려고 했던 것은 전체주의는 20세기 초에만 일어났던 특이한 현상이 아니라 언제든지 사회가 위기에 직면하면 그 망령이 다시 되살아날 수 있음을 경고하는 것이었다.|This study is focused on literary characteristics and totalitarian implications which George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty Four shows. Its purpose is to arouse people's attention to neo-fascism for fear that modern society should suffer totalitrian nightmare. Orwell's warning implied in 1984 promotes awareness to us in 21st century of how dangerous a totalitarian leader could be. He articulated that totalitarianism is not thought of as an opposite to capitalism, but as two sides of the same coin. Democracy is also in peril when capital is reaching a crisis.
