Abstract
True Korean traditional aestheticism is the concept of beauty that has been passed down from a long time ago. It is a governing form or color which has appeared in architecture, costume, ceremonies and daily appliances.
When speculation, consciousness, and innocent nature are expressed in our lives in artistic ways, our true beauty and distinctiveness can be revealed. With this in mind, this study aims to analyse the planes and aesthetic formativeness of the traditional patchwork wrapping-cloth of the Joseon period to find new possibilities for artistic expression. For this purpose, through the development of diverse concepts of artistic works and experiments, this study looks at the directions in Korean traditional painting, and applies the aesthetic sense and formativeness of women in the Joseon period for presentation of creative possibilities in contemporary painting.
The body of the study classified patchwork wrapping-cloth into the categories of the beauty of color, formative beauty, practical beauty, and expression using Korean traditional paper to look at the formative characteristics of patchwork wrapping-cloths. Also selected works by artists such as Kim Hwan-Ki, Park, Rae-Hyon and Yoo, Young-Gook, who used patchwork wrapping cloth as art, were used to understand the Korean-style images, formative beauty in lines, colors, shapes, materials and compositions in their works. Finally, this study reinterpreted characteristics of the patchworks presented in my master's thesis by investigating what background and techniques were related in terms of contemporary art.
Patchwork wrapping cloth is made of scrap pieces left over after women had made clothes and it has the traditional Korean aestheticism of simplicity, freedom, and concise composition. Its formative characteristics of geometric lines and planes were expressed through the overlapping of experiences and feelings in the space of the past and in reality in life.
This study has meaning in that it discovered that the patchwork has a beauty with concise and exquisite composition and the emotional understanding of Joseon women, and the Korean folk cultural elements of simplicity and aestheticism have been expressed through unrestrained use of geometric planes, traditional lines, and diverse aspects in my painting.
More intensive and developmental work in art depends on new viewpoints to look at objects rather than a new style of expression and we should have new understanding of and interest in tradition to create better works of art.
