Characteristics of The Suicide Attempters Referred to Department of Psychiatry in Emergency Room of An University Hospital

Objectives : The present study aimed to examine socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of suicide attempters referred to department of psychiatry after visiting emergency room. Through result, we discuss the factor that affecting suicide attempts to reduce suicide on our society. Methods : The author analyzed data obtained through review of articles related to suicide attempters, and using analysis of frequency, compared findings of 29 variables obtained from medical record including sex, age and suicide attempts related factors, etc. Based on this data, 88 cases of suicide attempters visiting emergency room of the Chosun university hospital in Gwangju city from January, 2010 to August, 2013 were reviewed by author. Result : In this study, 1) Male/Female ratio was 0.8:1. 2) In age, twenty forties, fifties, above the sixties was more in descending order. 3) in another social-demographic factors, urban residence, level of education of high school, no religious belief, middle social economic status, unemployment, married martial status, with familial residence was more than any other factors. 4) In psychiatric history, no past history, major depressive disorder, schizophrenia was more in descending order. 5) In cause of suicide attempts, problem related to interpersonal relationship, familial conflict was more in descending orders. 6) The most common suicide attempt method was drug digestion followed by self-injury. 7) In suicide attempt history, no suicide attempt history was more than any other cases. 8) In another clinical factors, impulsive suicide attempts, parasuicide attempts, suicide attempts in alcohol drinking state was more than any other factors. 9) In final psychiatric diagnosis using DSM-IV-TR, the most common psychiatric diagnosis was major depressive disorder. Conclusion : We need attention to characteristics of suicide attempters . Suicide attempts is more in the prime of the life, and refusal rate of psychiatric interview is very high in our society. the most common psychiatric diagnosis is still depression, the most common method is drug ingestion. To decrease and protect the suicide and suicide attempters, we will require to research more an in-depth and broad study on suicide and construct organized social-support system for high risk group of suicide
