- Abstract
- This study has meaning in that it analysed the composition techniques and characteristics of the musical styles in No. 3 of Op.31 a piano sonata by Beethoven to help develop a deeper understanding of the musical pieces for actual performance.
Beethoven wrote piano sonatas his whole life and his compositions were classified into three periods: the early period (1782-1802), the middle period (1802-1816), and the late period(1816-1824). No. 3 of Op.31 was written between 1801 and 1802, or the middle period, when Beethoven had a difficult time due to the deterioration of his hearing.
This sonata is a piece in E♭major consisting of four movements which was the only style used in the middle period. The music has a structure of fast movements instead of the typical sonata structure, with a Scherzo in Movement 2 and a Minuet in Movement 3.
It is characterized by a cheerful and bright tone with unique wits and humor. As the themes and rhythms in each movement are similar, it gives a sense of integration.
Trills, delicate melodies, piano sounds, and techniques make this sonata valuable.
In this study, the piano sonatas composed by Beethoven were divided into three periods and the characteristics of each period were looked at. It is expected that the results of this study will be helpful in actual performances highlighting the styles of each movement, composition, melody, chord, and rhythm.
