- Abstract
- Objective: The purpose of this study is to use it as a basis for the health care guidelines for the muscle mass and cardiovascular disease of Korean population by analyzing the prevalence of sarcopenia and metabolic syndrome and studying their association in population over the age of 20 using the "2009-2010 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey" data.
Methods: Among 19,491 participants in the 2009–2010 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the number of subjects studied was 12,256, excluding 55 who did not measure waist circumference and 613 people who did not have blood tests and did not have blood pressure tests and 277 people who did not measure limb fat, from 13,201 adults over the age of 20 who had examined bone density and appendicular skeletal muscle mass(ASM). Data were analyzed through descriptive analysis, correlation and multiple regression analysis by using a SPSS version 18.0 statistical program.
Results: Metabolic syndrome and its components were all significantly higher in the sarcopenia group than in the non-sarcopenia group. After stratification by sex, age, family income, education level, marital status, residence, smoking, alcohol, high intensity exercise, muscular strength exercise, cancer and arthritis, ORs for the MetS was higher in subjects with sarcopenia as compared with those without sarcopenia(odds ratio[OR]: 2.12, 95% CI:1.81-2.49). In the logistic regression, which stratified age groups into three groups, sarcopenia and metabolic syndrome in all age groups, those aged 20–39(OR: 2.02, 95% CI:1.60-2.55) and those aged 40–64(OR: 2.36, 95% CI:1.91-2.92) and aged those 65 and over(OR: 2.02, 95% CI:1.60-2.55) showed statistically significant results.
Conclusion: In this study, adults over the age of 20 with sarcopenia were more related to metabolic syndrome than those without sarcopenia. It is thought that public health intervention will be needed nationally to prevent sarcopenia that are linked to these metabolic syndrome.
