Performance and related factors with radiation safety management among dental hygienists

Objectives: Radiation examination was widely used in dental clinics. The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of radiation safety management and related factors among some dental hygienists.

Methods: Total 183 dental hygienists from 110 dental clinics in G area were selected by convenience sampling methods. Performance score for radiation safety management by general characteristics and job-related characteristics tested using t-tests and ANOVA. The associations between radiation knowledge, attitude and performance were tested using correlation analysis. Finally, the associated factors with performance for radiation safety management were investigated using multiple linear regression analysis after controlling covariates.

Results: Total performance score for radiation safety management was 35.71±12.49 in dental hygienists. The performance score was significantly higher in multiple linear regression analysis, sex, numbers of dental hygienists, the average numbers of patients admitted one day, the total clinical experience, existence of manual for radiation safety management and perceived education necessity of radiation safety management, were statistically with performance of radiation safety management.

Conclusions: The performance score was relatively lower. And the performance score was associated radiation safety manual and safety equipment. So, the improvement of radiation-related work environment by provision of radiation safety manual and equipment will increase the performance for radiation safety management in dental hygienists.
