Objectives: This study was conducted to compare the emotional labor, burnout, and job satisfaction of children's ward nurses and general ward nurses to analyze their relationships and to effectively manage emotional labor and burnout while increasing job satisfaction.
Method: Subjects were nurses who have worked for at least 6 months in children's wards and general wards excluding those in intensive care and special departments in general hospitals, with 3 located in G metropolitan city and M city in Jullanamdo and self-administered surveys were given to 100 nurses in children's wards and 200 nurses in general wards and after surveys with insincere responses and subjects who rejected participation in the study were excluded, surveys from a total of 298 subjects were used in the final analysis including 100 from nurses in children's wards and 198 nurses in general wards. The data collection period was from September 20th, 2015 to October 20th, 2015. The collected data was analyzed using the SPSS 22.0 program using the Chi-square test, the t-test, the Pearson Correlation Coefficient, and ANCOVA.
Results: With nurses in children's wards scoring emotional labor 3.84±.704 points (out of a total of 5 points), nurses in general wards scoring emotional labor 3.10±.384 points (out of a total of 5 points), nurses in children's wards scoring burnout 3.28±.704 points (out of a total of 6 points), nurses in general wards scoring burnout 2.34±.542 points (out of a total of 6 points), nurses in children's wards scoring job satisfaction 2.69±.540 points (out of a total of 5 points), and nurses in general wards scoring job satisfaction 3.56±.334 points (out of a total of 5 points), all results showed significant differences (p<.001). Both nurses in children's wards and nurses in general wards showed significant positive correlations between emotional labor and burnout, significant negative correlations between emotional labor and job satisfaction, and significant negative correlations between burnout and job satisfaction (p<.01).
Conclusion: The emotional labor and burnout of nurses in children's wards were significantly higher than those of nurses in general wards and their job satisfaction was significantly lower, showing that a fundamental understanding and awareness regarding emotional labor, burnout, and job satisfaction are needed and that programs that can effectively manage emotional labor and exhaustion must be developed.
