The Effect of Job Stress and Self-efficacy on the Organizational Commitment among Dental Hygienists

Objectives : This study was performed to identify the association of job stress including job demand and job autonomy, and self-efficacy with organizational commitment among dental hygienists.
Methods : The study subjects were 398 dental hygienists working at dental clinics in Gwangju. The data were collected by self-administered questionnaire composed of questions about general and work-related characteristics, job stress, self-efficacy and organizational commitment. The used statistical analysis were t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis to find the associated factors with organizational commitment.
Results : The means of organizational commitment, job demand, job autonomy and self-efficacy were 57.14±11.04, 33.10±4.67, 58.48±7.66, and 55.91±6.84, respectively. In simple analysis, the statistically significant variables with organizational commitment were age, marital status, educational level, residential type, income, their careers, positions and state of employee welfare in clinics. Organizational commitment had statistically significant positive correlation with job autonomy (r=0.482, p<0.001) and self-efficacy (r=0.328, p<0.001). In the result of multiple regression analysis, organizational commitment was statistically significant associated with job autonomy (β=0.391, p<0.001), self-efficacy (β=0.235, p<0.001), state of employee welfare (β=9.846, p<0.001) and duration of working career (β=2.849, p=0.040).
Conclusions : To increase the organizational commitment of dental hygienist, the systems and policies in dental clinics might be developed in consideration of the associated factors which were identified in this study.
