Related Factors for Disaster Preparedness among Emergency Medical Technology Students

Purpose: This study identified the general characteristics, school life, disaster-related education, emergency rescue education, and disaster experience of students studying emergency rescue and measured their scores for dealing with disasters to analyse the factors influencing their scores for dealing with disasters and to provide basic data on disaster-related education in emergency rescue. Subjects and Methods: The subjects of this study were students studying emergency rescue in Jeollabukdo and responses from 234 subjects which faithfully responded to a given questionnaire were used in the analysis. Statistical analysis was conducted with the use of SPSS 18.0. A frequency test, an independent t-test and an ANOVA test to obtain means and standard deviation were performed. The relationships between the characteristics of the subjects and their scores for dealing with disasters was analysed with the use of linear regression analysis. The statistical significance was <0.05. Results: The mean score for dealing with disasters was 2.96±0.63 out of five points. As for the factors influencing the scores for dealing with disasters, scores for the subjects who had the experience of listening to programs on how to be prepared for disasters were significantly higher (p=0.007) than those who did not. The scores for subjects who answered that they were satisfied with the emergency rescue program provided by their school was significantly(p=0.025) higher than for those who were not. The scores for the subjects who responded they had experience in extracurricular emergency rescue programs was significantly higher (p=0.003) than for those of the subjects who did not have experience. Conclusion: To encourage students studying emergency rescue to pay more attention to disasters and to enhance their abilities in being prepared for disasters, an organized curriculum should be developed and strategies to create higher satisfaction in programs should be sought out. Also, when extracurricular opportunities to acquire licenses relating to diverse types of disaster programs are provided, students in emergency rescue can increase their ability through them so they are prepared for and can deal with disasters.
