This study aimed to investigate how Hatha yoga training influences middle-aged women's social/self-confidence and sociopsychological stress such as depression, anxiety and sleep disorders. Targeted sample groups of this study were an experimental group of 42 middle-aged female Yoga trainees and a control group of 12 trainees in Gwangyang, Korea.
The experimental group conducted Hatha yoga 3 times a week (1st: Chakra active program to prevent aging, 2nd: Joint activation program, 3rd: Programs for posture and muscle strengthening), 60 minutes each, a total of 72 times for six months. Before the yoga program, the purpose of this study was explained and a preliminary survey was performed for both of the groups. After the 6 month long yoga practice, a follow-up survey was carried out. The control group answered performed pre-test and post-test in the same way as the experimental group without practicing Hatha yoga.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, in the subjects degrees of the social roles and self confidence, the control group didn't show any significant difference between an average of 3.04 point before the experiment and 2.81 point after the experiment (p > 0.05). Meanwhile, the experiment group was significantly increased from an average of 3.31 points to 4.18 points (p < 0.05).

Second, in the degree of depression, the control group didn't show any significant difference between an average of 2.70 points before the experiment and 2.73 points after the experiment (p>0.05). Meanwhile, the experiment group was significantly dropped from an average of 2.74 points to 1.87 points (p<0.05).

Third, in the stress levels from sleep disorders and anxiety, the control group didn't show any significant difference between an average of 3.04 points before the experiment to 3.00 points after the experiment (p>0.05). Meanwhile, the experiment group was significantly decreased from an average of 2.59 points to 1.85 points (p<0.05).

The results of this study confirmed the alleviating qualities of Hatha yoga on reliving psychological stress of middle-aged women about depression, sleep disorders and anxiety as well as improving their social/self confidence. Practicing Hatha yoga should be encouraged among middle -aged women as a way to clear their mind , be more energetic, cope with social stress and find psychological well-being.
