The Association between Attitude and Knowledge towards the Elderly and Quality of Care Service among Home Caregivers

Objectives: This study was performed to identify the association between the knowledge and the attitudes towards the elderly and the quality of care services among some home caregivers. Methods: The study subjects were 429 home caregivers in Jeollanamdo and Gwangju. The data were collected using self-administered questionnaire composed of general and work-related characteristics and the scale of the knowledge and attitude toward the elderly and quality of care service. The used statistical analysis were t-test, ANOVA and Pearson’s correlation analysis. Results: The mean score of the knowledge the attitude towards the elderly and quality of care service were 10.30±2.31, 83.43±13.73 and 85.16±11.05, respectively. The mean of knowledge toward the elderly were statistically significant different in gender, educational level, length of career as care givers and monthy income. There were no variables associated with attitude toward the elderly. The quality of care service was associated with length of career as care givers. There was statistically significant correlation between knowledge and attitude toward the elderly(r=-.108, p=.025). The knowledge and attitude toward the elderly were not significant correlated with the quality of care service. The more knowledge on the elderly, the more positive the attitude toward the elderly. However, the correlations between knowledge on and attitudes toward the elderly and home care service quality were not statistically significant. conclusion: There was no association between knowledge and attitudes towards the elderly and the quality of care service. Further studies should be performed to identity the related factors with the quality of home care service and educational program should be developed to increase and the level of knowledge and attitude toward the elderly and quality of care service in home caregivers.
