- Abstract
- Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between NGAL and kidney injury index and severity among inpatients with acute kidney injury.
Methods: The relationship between NGAL and BUN and creatinine was confirmed by the correlation analysis, and the multiple regression analysis was conducted for creatinine with NGAL as an independent variable. Using the standard of dividing acute kidney injury into three stages, the subjects with a creatinine level of greater than 4 or taking dialysis were examined by the chi-square test and t-test.
Results: The subjects were a total of 40 and their mean age was 64.2±14.8. Males were 25(62.5%) and females were 15(37.5%). Mean NGAL was 895.2±419.4 and mean creatinine was 6.0±3.9, indicating a high level. Creatinine was significantly increased with NGAL(r=0.351; p=0.027). With corrected age and sex, the relationship between NGAL and creatinine was examined through multiple regression analysis. As a result, creatinine was significantly increased with NGAL(B=0.003, SE=0.001, p=0.022).
When the case with a creatinine level of greater than 4 or taking dialysis were defined as Stage 3, NGAL was not different according to the presence of Stage 3.
Conclusion: In conclusion, the analysis of the relationship between NGAL and other variables among some patients with acute kidney injury suggested that NGAL was correlated with creatinine but was not correlated with severity(dialysis or a creatinine level of greater than 4). Further large-scale research should be conducted to replicate the results of this study.
