Abstract

Korean English curriculum hardly contains teaching and learning punctuation process pertaining to English writing. The purpose of this research is to identify the present state of learning English punctuation based on the survey of high school students and teachers. Also, suggestions for teaching punctuation education will be provided by conducting students’ comprehension check on the punctuation. Ten English teachers and 276 high school students participated in the study. Ten questions for punctuation-comprehension were added to students’ survey. The result based on the students’ survey showed that the majority of students had rarely experienced learning punctuation, and even the experienced respondents evaluated themselves as having a low degree of understanding punctuation. The gap between the students who feel the necessity of learning punctuation and who do not is statistically meaningful as a result of t-test. This indicates that the degree of understanding punctuation could be increased because students desire to learn punctuation. Teachers are aware of the importance of punctuation and usually mention it in teaching. In conclusion, it is recommended that students need to be motivated to improve their comprehension of punctuation. Also, the punctuation learning process should be explicitly contained in the English curriculum.
