한국어와 영어 그림책에 나타난 ‘화’와 ‘기쁨’ 표현의 인지 의미론적 접근

Abstract

We experience many kinds of feelings such as anger, happiness, and sadness while we function in the world and interact with events around us. When we have a feeling, our bodies react to it and we express our emotions with bodily gestures. This paper aims to examine the emotion and bodily reactions from the perspective of cognitive semantics based on the analysis of Korean and English picture books. In the paper, emotional expressions categorized as anger and happiness were examined in English and Korean picture books. The literal, metaphorical, and metonymic expressions of the two feelings were compared. It was observed that English picture books expressed emotions through physical external reaction while Korean picture books showed emotions through physical internal reaction. Culturally, Koreans do not seem to show their feelings explicitly. Based on the finding, the paper proposed that the cultural difference shown in emotional expressions should be reflected when English picture books are translated into Korean.
