Music is definitely a universal language available to anyone in which man is able to communicate. It sure is the best tool through which we express our emotions and understand each other. Music has been playing an important role of human society developing variously depending on the changes of cultures, thoughts and values that underlie music of an era.
Despite the fact that man enjoys music by instinct, what kind of music a person get used to entirely depends on music education; in other words, nothing is better than music education when it comes to producing a whole person because it helps man express his emotions and thoughts and enhance his quality of life.
This thesis aims at finding how an important role music education plays in school where music education is pretty much ignored and recognizing music education makes great contributions not only to the development of aesthetic sentiments but also to academic achievement.
As people tend to overlook the fact that music education helps develop students' creativity and build their desirable character, this thesis will show the great importance of music education put on development of intelligence and sentiments by carrying out research on a group of high school students.
The issues focused on in the research are as follows.
First, the realm of music education in school curriculums
Second, the effect of music education on academic performance
Third, the realm that is considered to have had more influences on academic achievement - school education or private education
Fourth, the subject most correlated with music education
Fifth, the influence of music education on character-building
Sixth, the influence of music education on the development of aesthetic sentiments in the course of a person's growing.
The subjects were made up of 532 students(upper 30% and the others 70%) from academic high schools in Gwangju.
The questionnaire consists of 17 questions with statistics made up on the basis of a percentage of the total number of students being surveyed.
The results gained from the analysis of the survey are as follows.
First, the earlier music education is started, the more influences it have on the development of aesthetic sentiments.
Second, music education is relatively scarce in schools.
Third, students who have received music education continuously show relatively higher academic achievement.
Fourth, music has great influences on emotions.
Fifth, music education in adolescence helps students greatly to develop aesthetic sentiments
The results of the survey show that music education offered in childhood has a powerful influences on the students' academic results and development of their aesthetic sentiments as well. So, it is desired that students be given as many chances as possible to take more active part in getting closer to music in their preferably earlier stage.
