Abstract
A Study on the Necessity to Reinforce Art Education for Middle School Students


Everyone has a desire to pursue beauty. To satisfy such aesthetic desire, art exists and as culture has developed, there have been much effort to educate art. Thus, art education is closely related to basic human desire and has developed with much influence on human emotion and life.
Art education helps students frequently contact to artistic works and aesthetic objects, aiming at purifying their emotion, psychological therapy through which mental problems are treated through art, cultivating artistic functions such as making and drawing, and teaching knowledge on art. And art education has a meaning because it helps students, education and society present what they think by cultivating good eyes on the world. Art plays an important role in developing creativity through making things, cultivating emotion, and growing persons with healthy and outstanding personality in comparison with other subjects.
Advanced countries consider the 21th century as the era of culture and art, emphasizing art education, but Korean art education does not recognize it and rather distort it. Problems in current art textbooks present an objective of growing well-rounded persons, but it is sorry that students in higher grade tend to avoid and contempt art as education has focused on high scores at entrance examination has been reinforced.
These days, young people have been brought up in the generation in which directions of life and sense of value are confusing under the rapidly-changing society. As school education focusing on entrance examination is stiff and uniformly settled, students dare not attempt to do anything else in addition to preparation for the examination. Such wrong educational system makes adolescents confused and go wild and causes their psychological maladjustment such as violence, depression, anxiety, suicide, resistance and disorder in behaviors, which brought extreme pain to them and society.
In current situation when various adolescents's problems are caused, school education should focus on art education as a key to recovery of their personality to emphasize art education and to improve the current situation when normal education can not be presented because periods of art class were curtailed. To overcome the problems through art education, the importance of art education should be recognized and effective programs should be prepared. Then art education can be a powerful supporter for adolescents.
