The purpose of this study was to examine how middle schoolers who received technology education as part of the 7th national curricula perceived that subject, what problems there were with technology education and in which direction it should be led, as students' positive view of technology education might have a favorable impact on the development of the subject. And it's additionally meant to help provide practical and problem-solving learning activities for students to be technically well cultivated and improve their technical understanding, technical manipulation, technical problem-solving and technical evaluation skills.
As a result of investigating a pervasive trend in middle schoolers' outlook on technology education and feasible reform measures, the following findings were given:
First, regarding awareness of technology education, the students investigated didn't consider that education to be necessary a lot.
Second, as for interest in technology education, their satisfaction level with it was below the average. They were contented with the number of weekly lesson hours for that, but they didn't think there was enough time for experiment and practice.
Third, they were asked if every student could learn about technology regardless of gender, and most of them gave an affirmative answer. They thought that technology was one of general subjects that everybody should learn irrespective of gender.
Fourth, concerning the necessity of separating home economics from technology, the majority believed the two subjects shouldn't be separated. It seemed because they thought a separation of the two might result in increasing their workload, and they felt the integration of the two as one subject might put less pressure on them.
Fifth, in regard to the development of technology education, the students found that instruction to be a little elusive and of little use for real life. According to them, technology education should be interesting and easier to understand to step up its development, and what could be applied to real life should be taught.
Given the findings of the study, there are some suggestions about how to improve technology education and spread awareness of it among middle school students:
First, technology education should be useful, practical and informative enough to boost their awareness of its necessity and ignite their interest, and their learning capabilities and changing social environments should be taken into consideration. A wide variety of contents should be developed to further their academic achievement, and they should be helped to improve their ability and technology to make the right career decision.
Second, the students asked for more practical technology education than theoretical one. A sufficient number of lesson hours should be secured, and various learning materials and laboratories should be utilized to stir up students' class participation and change their way of looking at the subject.
Third, technology education is provided as one of general middle school courses that both boys and girls have to learn. So it's needed to teach students to view it as necessary for both man and woman. Specifically, level-based differentiated education should be offered for low-ranking students to get more interested, more interactive and more alert in class.
