The Effect of Folk Dance Experience through Short Play
Time on the Emotions of Middle School Students

The purpose of this study is aimed at concretely investigating how strongly folk dance experience as short play activity can effect the emotions of middle school students.
The study was conducted on a total of 215 second-grade middle school students - 107 students participating in folk dance in D Middle School and 108 students who are not participating in folk dance in G Middle School as of now 2007. For the study, the E.Q in-depth diagnostic test(Hwang Tae-ho. 1997) composed of 6 emotion factors(sympathy, self-awareness, self-control, patience, flexibility, optimistic view) was used. The students were asked to read the E.Q in-depth diagnostic test questionnaire and to mark on Yes or No. Folk dance was executed by the experimental group for 12 weeks(20 minutes a day, 5 times a week) through a short play time, while the control group was not allowed to participate in folk dance. After 12 weeks, the two groups were asked to fill the same questionnaire used in the pre-test, and the results of the comparative analysis between the two groups are as follows.
First, as a result of the verification of the pre- and post-test for the control group, no difference was found between the two tests regarding self-control, self-awareness, flexibility, patience and sympathy. However, a difference was found between the two regarding optimistic view.
Second, it was found that there was a difference between the times of pre- and post- folk dance participation by the experimental group in every factor such as self-control, self-awareness, flexibility, patience, sympathy and optimistic view, which shows that folk dance participation has a big effect on the emotions of middle school students.
Third, regarding the difference between the experimental and control groups after folk dance participation, it was found that there was a significant difference in self-control, which proves that folk dance participation has a big influence. On the other hand, folk dance participation was found to have a little influence regarding self-awareness, flexibility, patience, sympathy and optimistic view.
Fourth, the classification accuracy of the designed model was 60.4%, which shows the classification between folk dance participation and non-participation was well conducted. In addition, as a result of influence levels through the designed model, it was found that the more students participate in folk dance, the bigger influence it will have, regarding self-control and flexibility.
In conclusion, it can be said that folk dance activity during middle school's short play time has a big effect on the emotions of students. Therefore, folk dance experience through the short play time is very important for middle school students to stabilize their emotions, build positive self-consciousness and promote their emotional development that enables them to freely express and control their emotions.
