ABSTRACT

The effect of Music Activity on the Development
of Young Children's Prosocial behavior

The goal of study is to find out whether the music drama activity has a positive effect on young children's prosocial behavier by experimenting with the music drama.
Under this purpose, thing as follows are to be reviewed.

What effect does the music drama activity have on young children's prosocial behavior?

The subjects of this study were 40 children 5age of j kindergarten in Kwangju with each 20 children random sampled as one experimental group and the other comparative group. They were all from the middle class family with respect to their social and economic status. The measuring tool was the 'Situations Measure' made by E.McGrinnis and A.P.Goldstein(1990) that was translated and extracted by Lee Won-yeong, Park Chan-ok, and Noh Yeong-hee(1993) to measure their prosocial behavior.
While the experiment group participated in the music drama avtivity by their peers, the control group listened to music. The experimental treatment was given twice a week for 8 weeks. The data collected from the pre- and post-test were treated with the SPSS Windows 13.0 and t-tested.

The findings were as follows:
Music drama avtivity improved the infants' prosocial behavior to a significant degree. The subareas of prosocial behavior including the personal emotions, interpersonal relationships, and adaptation to school also made significant improvements.

The result demonstrated music drama activity by peers were effective in prosocial behavior.
