This study is to analyse domestic theses involved in sexual education for students with mental retardation to identify the trend of overall research on the sexual education and present educational suggestions for future sexual education for the students with mental retardation.
To identify domestic theses on sexual education for the students with mental retardation, this study analysed theses on sexual education published from 1990s to 2006.
The results of the study are presented as follows: First, this study analysed subjects of the seven theses and found that there were one on sexual education for parents (14.3%), three for mentally-retarded students (42.9%), and three for parents and teachers (42.9%).
Second, the subjects of the study were categorized into the mentally-retarded students, teachers, parents, and teachers and parents. The degree of the retardation were categorized into as follows: light, mild serious, serious, severe, no-category. This study analysed the subjects and found that there were 2 (28.6%) for mentally-retarded students, 1 (14.3%) for teachers, 1 (14.3%) for parents, and 3 (42.9%) both for parents and teachers.
Third, this study analysed the types of the studies and found that there were six of survey research (85.7%) and one of experiment (14.3%).
Fourth, the results of the study are analysed as follows: For sexual education for parents, step-by-step education according to age is recommended, and repetitive education programs which are easy to understand should be prepared. For the education for mentally-retarded students, individualized programs according to the degrees of retardation and actual task programs should be developed. Parents and teachers recognized the necessity of the sexual education and emphasized early sexual education. Teachers showed more active attitude in sexual education.
Fifth, this study suggests the followings: For sexual education for parents, programs to meet the needs of parents and the mentally-retarded students should be developed and the results of the programs should be evaluated for contribution to qualitative improvement of the program. For the sexual education for mentally-retarded students, this study suggests that early education according to developmental ages should be emphasized and a focus should be given on prevention. For proper sexual education, effective teaching-learning materials should be developed and distributed.
This study concludes based on the above results as follows:
First, this study analysed the subjects of the research and found that more active studies on the subjects are needed.
Second, for research on sexual education programs, step-by-step research should be developed according to features of students.
Third, as the types of research were confined to survey and experiment, research using various methods should be developed.
Fourth, the conclusion emphasizes the step-by-step education and repetitive education, so the education should be connected to class activity.
Fifth, according to the suggestions of the study, sexual education programs containing the needs of parents and mentally-retarded students should be developed and the results of the programs should be evaluated. Fifth, as this was a scientific journal involved in special education, this study set up limits and anlalyzed only 7 domestic research papers. However, further research should be done with respect to other fields which are related to special education, such as social welfare.
