Abstract
As mental-retarded students are not provided sufficient physical activities due to their disorder in many fields, they show considerable retardation in their basic physical strength. This study selects folk game as an item to improve their basic physical strength, aiming at identifying its influences on movement control ability of mental-retarded students. The folk game program used for this study was organized according to characteristics of the subject students based on what was obtained from analysis of curriculum involved in health, bibliography on folk game, suggestions from other teachers and the author's experiences in teaching:
For the purposes, this study presents the following questions:
First, in the mental-retarded student before applying a folk game activity program and after applying, is there difference of balance?
Second, in the mental-retarded student before applying a folk game activity program and after applying, is there difference of agility?
Third, in the mental-retarded student before applying a folk game activity program and after applying, is there difference of flexibility?
To solve these questions, this study provided a total of 15 sessions of a folk game program three times a week for 40 minutes for five weeks using pre- and post- design, targeting three elementary students who are attending to Y special school in H county, Jeollanamdo and measured change of the target students.
This study measured movement control ability with the following test tools: balance test for which students stood with one leg with eyes closed, agility test through running and flexibility through sit-up.
The results of the study are presented :
First, when folk game activities were applied, the subjects showed improved balance: Subject A; 7.64 seconds, Subject B; 7.30 seconds; and Subject C; 7.79 seconds.
Second, when the folk game activities were applied, they showed improved agility: Subject A; 2.96 seconds, Subject B; 3.04 seconds; and Subject C; 3.23 seconds reduced.
Third, when the folk game activities were applied, they showed improved flexibility: Subject A: 5cm, Subject B: 5.87cm, and Subject C: 4.90cm improved
Based on the results, this study suggests that more effective folk game programs should be developed as it was proved that the folk game program developed for this study was effective in improvement of movement control ability.
