Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of attention training program to the students with mental retardation who has attention problem.
The major problems of the study are following:
First, Is there any effect that attention training program increase on the attention concentration ability?
Second, Is there any effect that attention training program decrease on the attending diffuseness behavior?
Third, Is there any effect that attention training program decrease on the teaching interruption behavior?
Four student in the special school for the mental retardation were chosen for this study. The students were applied 25 sessions of attention training program that took 40 minutes per each one. The intervention period of program was from May 15, 2006 to June 17, 2006.
Training program which developed by Chae Gyu-Man, Jang Eun-Jin, and Kim Do-Yeon(2003) was used this study. The main contents of the training program were consist of problem recognition, problem solving through dialogue and teacher modeling.
The teachers' valuation measure for attention deficit and FAIR test were administered to assess attention concentration ability. During period of intervention, the subjects were observed and the results counted the target behaviors as baseline, intervention, and post.
As a result of the intervention, the teachers' valuation measure for attention deficit score was lessened, result of FAIR test of this study was elevated.
Also impulsive and hyperactive behaviors such as garrulity, haste and disturbance of others and that were reductive more during the intervention period than during the baseline period. The target behaviors were also reductive more during the post test period than during the baseline test period.
The results of this study are following:
First, The attention training program had a positive effect to the student with mental retardation who has low attention concentration ability. The result of teachers' valuation measure was improved and The P(selective attention power) of FAIR test was elevated.
Second, The attention training program had a positive effect to the student with mental retardation who has attention diffuseness behavior.
Third, The attention training program had a positive effect to the student with mental retardation who has teaching interruption behavior.
Though the effect was different from the character and emotion of the subjects and the difficulty of the task, but Off-task behavior, Fidgeting behavior, Out of seat behavior which they had were reduced.
So attention training program is effective to reduce teaching interruption and excessive behaviors that is garrulity, haste and disturbance of others. Therefore, attention training program can be applied to student with mental retardation in special school and need to be developed continually.
