This research studies the method to cope with the problem of children's maladjustment, which has been on the rise. This starts from the assumption that integrating the specialized art education, which utilizes performance, into the established one can be a precautionary measure to the cause of ordinary children's maladjusted behavior as well as improve maladjusted children's behavior.
Fostering human resources required by the future society should have the purpose of raising the ability to adjust to the future society and provide the need and the contents of learning. Art education, which increases the understanding of the activity of visual expression and art, develops the artistic sense and sensitivity of learners. It also has the purpose of fostering the whole man, who has the competence of implanting individuality, creativity and originality through various visual activities and being able to understand, develop and succeed to art culture with various thinking power. The variety of contemporary art is being composed of new expressions as years go by. The art instruction for children utilizing new expressions can avoid the established instruction technique, composed of an energetic, fresh and vivid activity. Adopting performance to instruction-learning activities can be one of fresh and interesting instructions for children because they are dynamic rather than static, like a new change and have the trait of belonging to a group.
This research theoretically weighed performance, instruction and treatment, adopted art instruction utilizing performance to children and analysed the children's reaction to it. After that, this analysed the change of objects' maladjusted behavior appearing in the process of the program to assess the effect.
The case study was carried out by a researcher at a private art institute located in Bongsun dong, Kwangju city from Jul 1st, 2004 to Feb 25th, 2005. The objects were five preschool children, who showed maladjusted behavior, and twenty ordinary children participated in the study as a control group. Performance art program was composed of twelve courses and divided into beginning, representation, practice and consolidation and then carried out.
The results are as follows :
Performance art play was helpful for children to shape confidence in learning. Concentration, completion and creativity improved while learning various materials and techniques and children came to have confidence and the sense of accomplishment in the process of working.
It improved their self-consciousness. Aggressive trait, negative ego and hostility to family were presented, and the activity radiating these feelings presented the effect of sublimation and purification. The children recognized their right self-image, reduced offensive, loose, and negative speech toward theirselves and increased the speech of feeling as well. It produced much change in shaping the right interpersonal relations for children, improved collaboration, the techniques of making a reasonable relationship with friends during co-activities and self-assertion and enabled them to be good at presenting their works.
It is thought that we should Integrate performance art play for children's maladjusted behavior into the established art education, and as the special and effective method much progress and utilization are needed hereafter.
