Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the efficiency of the methods of teaching and learning English via the internet, especially computer-mediated communication tools. In this era of information and technology the internet is one of the most powerful ways of communication in English. And it is abundant in teaching and learning materials of English and has many advantages in using such materials.
Among others the internet provides students learning English with the following benefits and advantages.
(1) Motivation to learn and enjoyment of learning English with authentic materials
(2) learner-centered learning activities and students' responsibility increased
(3) Exposure to authentic daily English in and out of the classroom.
(4) Creative outlets and opportunities for publication.
(5) Both inter- and intra-class collaboration.
(6) Cross-cultural understanding and communication.
(7) Development of the skills of using computer and internet technology.
The potentiality of the internet in English education is immense. Almost all the organizations and companies have their own web sites which are abundant in useful materials in English. Most broadcasting stations have their own web sites which contains a great number of materials in English. And so many individuals have their private web sites to teach and learn English on the internet. The internet is overflowing with various English materials.
Many of the materials on the internet can be used in the English classroom to help students develop their four skills of English and to enlarge their knowledge of almost all the affairs in the world. So the internet should be incorporated into the English classroom for more effective teaching and learning activities. The internet can gives great and effective varieties to the activities.
The more enthusiastic and more knowledgeable the English teachers are, the more successfully they can utilize the internet in the English classroom. This study surveys the advantages and services of the internet, presents some methods and techniques which are useful for the development of the English four skills, and evaluates the efficiency of the methods and techniques.
