The internet is called the sea of information as it contains and spreads a great quantity of information. More than 80% of the web sites are in English and many of them can be used as valuable materials for teaching and learning English. Nowadays many English teachers have access to the internet but few use it as real teaching resources.
The purpose of this study is to find out how to improve students' communicative competence of English via the multimedia tools for communication, especially the internet chatting. The subjects of this study were the second graders in a middle school and they had been measured for one hour per week for two months. The contents of their textbook were analyzed and the topics for the test were extracted with reference to the standards of learning and testing, based on the seventh national curriculum. Each chatting team consisted of five students with different achievements at school. They were given the specific items of information about the situations, including explanations of some pictures and some simulations about a hospital, a store, and a restaurant were formulated. The activities of each team were measured and evaluated and all the students were given feedback.
The result of this study is as follows.
First, it shows that the internet chatting in English is very effective to help to improve the students' communication competence of English.
Second, the students have difficulties in doing chatting because they are not familiar with the English chatting format and English typing. So they cannot concentrate on their chatting topics in the beginning.
Third, the students shows strong self-directed attitudes after the experiment and have learned to practice chatting in English.
Forth, the students fe딘 that chatting in English via the internet decreased their feelings of English as an instrumental language.
In conclusion, the findings of this study suggests that reading, writing and speaking instructions using the internet chatting are very effective to improve students' communication competence of English.
