Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the operation and curriculum of computer education in elementary schools and to identify problems regarding computer education. This study focuses on the analyzing of the current computer education curriculum arranged without considering computer speciality and aptitude education which is an important part in elementary schools and suggesting its improvement to be more effective and systematic.
To examine this purpose, I studied the following :
First, I analyzed the computer education curriculum implemented in the schools discretionary hours and computer speciality and aptitude education in Gwangju national university of education, Gwangju attached elementary school.
Second, I investigated the effects of computer learning abilities through the application of Hangul, Powerpoint and Internet usage course which is given a great deal of weight on the schools discretionary hours in the fifth grade to four second grade classes.
Third, I distributed questionnaires based on the learning effects of computers through the application of computer classes to the fifth graders in Gwangju area in order to find out the operational status and suggested improvement methods of the current computer education curriculum.
The findings resulted from this study were as follows:
First, the contents of the computer textbooks used in the schools discretionary hours are easy and don't reflect students' computer ability.
Second, the computer textbooks used in the schools discretionary hours should be reorganized considering the contents of computer speciality and aptitude education.
Third, the computer education curriculum should be operated consistently and systematically.
Fourth, It should be considered to operate computer education as a compulsory subject not an optional subject in elementary schools.
Fifth There is a big gap in students' computer using abilities.
Sixth, Students are taught using the same repeated contents of computer education from elementary schools up to high schools.
