Abstract
This study was conducted by questionnaire and e-mailing 23 teachers for the middle-school English course at 19 special schools for students with hearing impairment around the nation in order to investigate actual conditions of the middle-school English education at schools for students with hearing impairment according to the 7th National Curriculum.
First, analysing the actual conditions of English education environment of the middle-school course at special schools for students with hearing impairment according to the 7th National Curriculum showed that the middle-school English class accounted for four hours per week and most teachers used both verbal and sign languages at the same time. In addition, the majority of the respondents had the opinion that English education at schools for students with hearing impairment is definitely needed to improve the quality of life for students.
Second, as the result of analysing the actual conditions of the middle-school English teaching methods used at special schools for students with hearing impairment according to the 7th National Curriculum, it was found that student-centered classes emphasized by the 7th English Curriculum were not usually conducted, but differentiated English classes were performed. Besides, when it came to elements for efficient English teaching and learning, sign language education was seen as a possible visual material.
Third, after the actual conditions of using educational materials and appliances for the middle-school English course at special schools for students with hearing impairment according to the 7th National Curriculum were analysed, it was revealed that choosing educational materials depended on students' level and interest, and there were many negative views on the efficiency of the 7th English Curriculum textbooks for the students with hearing impairment to study English. It was found that the most frequently used appliances were picture cards and authentic materials. The main reason for the appliances used less frequently was that the effect of using them was insufficient.
