Abstract
The present study purposed to examine the effects of adolescents' character building through dance education on their self-expression.
People in their highly sensitive adolescence experience extremely active social and mental development. During this period, they develop their personal abilities and sound interpersonal relations and build their character through dancing. Consequently, dance education contributes to the formation of social and mental personality. Thus, this study investigated how dance, which changes by environment and experience, affect individuals' character building and their self-expression.
For this purpose, this study distributed 255 questions to adolescents and recovered 240. With the exception of 8 questionnaires that were not answered properly, 116 questionnaires answered by dance-majoring students and 116 answered by non-majoring students, so a total of 232 questionnaires were included in final analysis.
Conclusions drawn from the analysis of data are as follows.
First, with regard to character building, dance-majoring students showed higher development in the emotional aspect and the active aspect while non-majoring students in steadfastness and sociability.
Second, difference was observed between dance-majoring students and non-majoring students in the effect of character building on self-expression. In dance-majoring students, sensibility, adaptability and activeness affected their self-expression while in non-majoring students sensibility, steadfastness, leadership and activeness affected their self-expression.
