Abstract
The aim of this study is to research material that will help improve the method, problems and conditions of Korean Language Performance Assesment in high school. The objects of this study are the 13 high schools for college and 2 high school for occupation in Gwangju City and are based on the real Korean Language Performance Tests applied and performed in these school in 2004.
This is to research and analyze the condition of and the students' and teachers' recognition of the Korean Language Performance Assesment through their answers given on the questionnaire. This has the potential to help the Korean Language Performance Assesment by seeking out methods to improve upon the performance assesment.
The result of this study is as follows.
The year plan of performance assesment test in early semester year shows the evaluation of language ability suitable for Korean Language education. Also, it indicates a variety of performance tests, being done once in every term. The resulting grade effects a ration of 30%, evaluating the standard levels in three stages. However, it seems that sometimes performance test can results in the assignments of too much learning for students, so it may be far from teaching-learning motives needed for the development stages of learners. It cause students to give bubbling grades by using common and easy test questions, in evaluating them in terms of escaping heavy loads for students.
Through researching and analyzing the responsive degree of students when asked about the necessity of the performance test it was shown that students consider the performance test to be necessary and positive. Although, students feel that it is a big pressure because most performance tests are done at the same time in the term before the paper test. They think the result of the performance test are fair and trust their teachers' evaluation.
As a result of analyzing the responsive degree of teachers when asked the same question it is shown that they hold the same opinion about the efficiency and validity of the performance test regardless of their years of teaching experience. However, they feel it is hard to have the evaluation reliably objective and that it gives teachers another burden. The teachers ar doubtful that it can be performed to meet the original goals and aims of the test. Therefore, they feel that there needs to be a common mood and attitude between the policies of the teachers, the education halls and the schools. Also, they feel that they need training relative to the test.
Korean Language teachers require the introduction of various evaluation materials by Ministry of Education and Educational Hall as well as scoring instrument to improve the method of the Korean Language Performance Test.
They suggest that the test should be carried out, based on the virtue of self control, innovation of education only for entering colleges, the lessening of teachers' classes, proper classes and class students scale, and the appropriate educational environments. Surely, they are required to try to develop their expert techniques through training relative to the test.
The objects of the study were the Korean Language teachers and students in first and second grades in Gwangju City, so this study is limited since the object were only from Gwangju city high schools. In order to extend the study results, it is necessary to examine and research the vast region and the parents of students who belong to our educational core.
