Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyse the effects of backyard gardening activities on the drawing expression abilities of young children. In more details, the aims of the study were to:
1) Examine how appropriately young children participating in activities of cultivating a vegetable garden improve drawing expression abilities in terms of the clear representation of a subject for painting, rich contents and sophisticated details and uniqueness and combination in composition.
2) Analyse the differences of drawing expression abilities between young children participating in vegetable gardening activities and those who are not involved in such activities.
The subjects of the study were 40 children, aged 4 and 5 years males/females, attending B and C kindergarten at Naju city in Jollanamdo. The study was conducted for 15 weeks using 12 teaching topics.
In order to teach 20 children chosen for experimental group, B kindergarten used children's direct experience gained from backyard gardening activities whereas C kindergarten depended largely on traditional teacher centered approaches to educate 20 children selected for control group.
Both groups were compared by pre/post test. t-test was used to analyse differences of mean values between the two groups. Verification was done at p<.001 significance level. For statistical treatment SPSS 10.1 program was used.
The results found in the study indicated that there were significant differences in the expression level of drawings between the two groups. Young children in experimental group scored higher than children in the control group in terms of the clear representation of painting subjects, rich contents and sophisticated details and uniqueness and combination in composition. It was suggested that teachers in early childhood education need to adopt more students-centered approaches than traditional approaches, emphasizing the importance of educational experience not only to observe but also to perceive various natural plants and insects by cultivating a small vegetable garden as an educational subject, for the improvement of young children's drawing expression abilities.
